About
Eastern Film Journal is an independent-minded editorial publication about Eastern European film culture. It is for curious viewers who want to understand how films relate to the places, languages and histories from which they come.
A region of many cinemas
Eastern Europe is not a single film tradition. The publication looks across countries and periods while keeping local contexts in view. Articles may consider a national cinema, a shared history, a film form, a question of translation or the route a film takes to reach viewers.
For curious viewers
No specialist knowledge is required. We explain terms when they matter, distinguish interpretation from established fact and aim to make each subject rewarding even if you have not seen every film mentioned.
A field-notebook approach
We favour precise observations over sweeping claims: a choice of language, a recurring screen form or a change in how films circulate. The aim is to open up a subject without pretending that one example speaks for an entire region.
